Fernie Roasting Company operates in a beautiful area of Canada where the local environment plays a large role in our families, friends and clients well being. In order to help preserve this, FRC is taking action to become more sustainable in all aspects of our operations. Below are some of our current initiatives, however, other areas will be focused on as we execute these and continue down our sustainability path.

Waste Generation

Being a coffee roaster and importing our green coffee in protective packaging to ensure the freshest most delicious products we can, the beans come in standard coffee sacks with an internal grain pro bag to protect the beans. These bags are designed to be reused and are made from recycled materials. At FRC we use these to contain our organic, recyclable and other waste, reducing the need for plastic garbage bags. Organic waste generated during roasting (off roasted beans and chaff (silver skin released from the beans during roasting)) is donated to local growers to be incorporated into their soil, creating void space/aeration, and providing additional nutrition into the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers

Sustainable Packaging

By the end of Q1 2025, FRC will transition all of our packaging to recyclable or compostable materials. Currently FRC has a variety of packaging ranging from recyclable, compostable and less sustainable packaging (plastic/foil bags). Technology Future roasting machines purchased for FRC, as dictated by our continued growth, will be fully electric, reducing the need for propane or natural gas fuel sources.
